The Story Behind Every NBA Team’s Name

After the New Orleans Hornets were sold to Tom Benson, owner of the NFL’s New Orleans Saints, Benson wanted to change the name to something local. The Jazz wouldn’t give back their name because of all the history, so names like “Brass” and “Krewe” were suggested. Ultimately, the team went with Pelicans. The species was named Louisiana state bird in 1966 because of the generous and nurturing attitude the birds display toward their young.
