The Story Behind Every NBA Team’s Name

Most of the time, a team’s name stops making sense after relocation, but some names start being even more relevant. The Detroit Pistons started off in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1941, where they were known as the Zollner Pistons, in reference to team owner Fred Zollner, who named the club after his piston manufacturing business. The name was shortened to just Pistons in 1948, which was just the thing for the team’s 1957 move to Motor City.
