Maurice Stokes played quite a while ago, from 1955 to 1958, but his story is by far the saddest on this list. Playing for the Cincinnati Royals, the 1955 rookie of the year made the All-Star game in each of the three seasons that he played and averaged a career double double in points and rebounds. In the last game of the 1957-58 season, Stokes took a nasty hit and fell right on his head, which left him permanently paralyzed.
